Definition: A decrease in the separation between individual ice floes resulting in increased ice concentration.  Bushuyev 

Pieces of floating ice are considered to be compacting when they are subjected to a converging motion, which increases ice concentration and/or produces stresses that may result in ice deformation.  WMOSeaIce
