Definition: The minimum distance between the ground surface and Frozen Ground at any time during the thawing season in an area subject to seasonal freezing and thawing. When no Frozen Ground remains, thawing is complete, and Depth of Thaw cannot be determined. Depth of Thaw may relate to the Active Layer in Permafrost environments or to any other areas with seasonal freezing.
