Ablation hollows that develop during intense sunshine. On low- latitude snow, firn, and ice fields these may grow into spectacular features called snow or ice penitents. IACSSnow A suncup is a small depression on a snow or firn surface formed by melting and evaporation resulting from direct exposure to the sun. A series of bowl-like depression melted into a snow or ice surface, separated by a network of connected ridges. Individual suncups may be more than three feet deep and ten feet in diameter.
