Vertical selection

Alternative definitions (1), class: vernacular (0)
Term: Vertical selection
Definition: This is a phenomenon of particle sorting caused by multiple freeze-thaw processes. Fine particles move downward whereas larger particles are transported to the surface. The process is correlated to the moisture content of the ground. The particle selection decreases with decreasing moisture content. When the cryogenic process determines a horizontal particle differentiation then this is called a Horizontal Selection.
