Term: Marine ice
Definition: Ice formed by the freezing of sea water at the base of an ice shelf. The formation of marine ice can contribute substantially to ice-shelf mass balance (see basal accumulation), and marine ice can be a substantial component of the ice shelf itself. See also accreted ice.
