Term: Nilas
Definition: A thin, elastic crust of ice bending easily on waves and swell. Nilas has a matte surface and is up to 4 in (- 10 cm) thick. Under pressure it thrusts into a pattern of inter- locking fingers (see FINGER-RAFTED ICE). May be subdivided into dark nilas and light nilas.
