The Transient Layer is the near-surface Ice-Rich layer marking the long term position of the contact between the Active Layer and the upper part of the Permafrost. The Transient Layer is a typically p
art of the uppermost Permafrost but, under certain conditions, occasionally joins the Active Layer.
That region of the solar atmosphere lying between the chromosphere and the corona where the temperature rises from 104K to 106K. The transition region is only a few thousand kilometers thick.
