Definition:

Lower hybrid oscillations involvelongitudinal motions of electrons and ions in a magnetized plasma. Thepropagation of lower hybrid waves must be close to perpendicular to thebackground magnetic field in so that electrons cannot move along field linesthus preventing wave growth. The lower hybrid frequency,ΦLH, can be calculated by usingΦLH =[(ΩceΩci)-1+Φpi-2]-1/2where Ωce andΩci are the electron and ion cyclotronfrequencies, respectively, and Phi;LH is the ionplasma frequency.
